About the WoodturnerMy name is Ron [Reuven] Zalk and I'm originally from the U.S. I began turning wood in the mid 70s in high school. I went on to move to Israel and get a B.S.E.E. From there I opened and ran my own computer company, E-Z Computers Ltd for 13 years. A goblet that I made in high school over 30 years ago. It's two pieces of teak glued together. During this time I turned wood occasionally but never anything serious. With the computer industry going into a slump, I decided to take a woodturning course from one of Israel's top woodturners, Eli Avisera in 2001. I had to work hard and practice a lot on my own in order to keep up with Eli's fast pace. I learned and accomplished so much in such a short period of time I was beginning to see the fruits of my labor. This gave me the impetus to make the decision to turn wood full time in 2003. From then on it was all self taught through books, videos and a lot of practice. I was fortunate to take a course with Richard Raffan, who is one major influence in my work. I was also very fortunate to take a course with Jimmy Clewes, another major influence in my my work. Others significant influences have come from Nick Cook, Alan Holtham, Bonnie Klien, and Chris Stott. I'm a member of the American Association of Woodturners and the Israel Association of Woodturners. |
